Bangabandhu satellite set to connect local TVs, ATMs

Alongside providing feed to local television channels (TVs), Bangabandhu satellite-I (BS-I) is set to connect automated teller machines (ATM) to offer uninterrupted and secured banking services, said officials. They said isolated parts of the country are also going to be connected with internet services using the bandwidth of the country’s first geostationary communication satellite which would complete one year of its launching on May 12.

Hon'ble Prime Minister launches MNP service

Govt. proposes three proposals to prevent rumors to Facebook

    BTRC to take measures to close 16 Facebook accounts, groups

    The Special Branch of Police has requested the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission to take measures to close 16 Facebook accounts, pages and groups, including a popular group of quota reform activists, in the wake of student protests for safe roads.
    An SB letter issued by its special police superintendent (media analysis) SM Ainul Bari on Sunday said that a group of people were using social media site Facebook to spread anti-government rumours and baseless information to incite student protests.

    Govt conducts 5G trial run

    South Asia's first test run of fifth generation (5G) mobile internet took place in Dhaka yesterday when download speeds of up to 4.17 gigabits per second were experienced. Prime Minister's ICT Affairs Adviser Sajeeb Wazed Joy witnessed the speed on a mobile device at “Bangladesh 5G Summit 2018” at the Pan Pacific Sonargaon in Dhaka and expressed satisfaction. Joy said Bangladesh would be one of the first countries to deploy 5G technology. “This is my promise for the next election,” he said, pointing out that the government had kept its last pre-election pledge of making 4G available. The demonstration was organised by the Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology in cooperation with telecom vendor Huawei and mobile operator Robi.

    Bangladesh moves up on UN E-Government Development Index

    Bangladesh has moved up nine steps on the E-Governance Development Index while it progressed 33 steps on the E-Participation Index, according to the report published by the UN that assessed the development over last two years. Bangladesh secured the 115th place among 193 countries on the E-Government Development Index or EGDI scoring 0.4862 and 51st place in E-Participation or EPI with a score of 0.8034.

    Though the test results of Bangladesh's first satellite, Bangabandhu-1 was expected to be in hand by Saturday evening, the SpaceX authorities are yet to provide its results, said Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission Dr Shahjahan Mahmood today.Talking to UNB, he said, "We did not receive the results of the test yet as SpaceX was still analyzing the data.     The third BPO Summit wrapped up yesterday with a call on the government and local financial institutions to open up their back offices for outsourcing as it would accelerate digitisation.     ‘Bangabandhu Satellite’ launches May 4

    BTRC Chairman Shahjahan Mahmud says Bangladesh’s ‘Bangabandhu Satellite’ will be launched from Florida’s Cape Canaveral on May 4. Private space flight and technology company SpaceX has confirmed the launch date for Bangladesh’s first satellite, he told on Wednesday. SpaceX had previously planned to launch the satellite using Falcon-9 rockets on Dec 16 of last year, but the launch was postponed due to damage from Hurricane Irma. It takes two months to prepare the pad for launching any satellite out of the SpaceX facility in Florida.

    Govt websites not 'hacked', downtime due to 'hardware failure': Cyber security chief

    India's cyber security chief on Friday cited "hardware failure" as the reason for several government websites facing downtime, rejecting reports of cyber attacks.
    "There has been no cyber attack on any government website or any sabotage. It is a hardware failure, affecting around 10 government websites. Drupal is a content management software used by the affected websites. The websites will be restored soon," national cyber security coordinator Gulshan Rai told TOI.

    Mobile internet access to reach 41% by 2025: GSMA

    Bangladesh’s unique mobile internet penetration will reach 41 percent by 2025, with 4G accounting for half of total connections, the GSMA has said in one of its reports about Bangladesh mobile industry.
    The mobile internet access has reached about 21 percent at the end of 2017, said the report published on Wednesday.

    YouTube shooting: at least three injured and female suspect dead in apparent suicide

    A shooting at YouTube’s California headquarters left at least three people wounded and a female suspect dead of an apparent suicide, police said Tuesday. The San Bruno police chief, Ed Barberini, said during a news conference that police had responded to 911 calls from the Silicon Valley tech campus and discovered a woman, whom they believed to be the shooter, dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Barberini did not release any information about a possible motive or the suspect’s identity, though late on Tuesday officials briefed local media that she was Nasim Najafi Aghdam, who was in her late 30s.

    Bangabandhu satellite to begin commercial operations in Aug

    Country’s maiden satellite Bangabandhu-1 will start commercial operations from August this year subject to its launch into the orbital slot at 119.1 Degrees East tentatively on April 24, a top official said. “We are expecting to begin the commercial operations from August and hopeful of launching the satellite at the end of this month after a series of tests,” Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) chairman Dr Shahjahan Mahmood told the daily sun on Wednesday. He said the American firm SpaceX has already started its pre-launch preparations to launch the satellite.

    Nahid cites steps to stop question leaks as HSC exams start

    The government has taken every possible measure to stop question leaks in Higher Secondary Certificate and equivalent exams, Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid said. The minister visited Siddeswari Girls College centre on the first day of HSC exams on Monday. “New problems are arising every day. We have taken all possible preventive measures based on the information we have received so far,” he said. Students have to enter the halls 30 minutes ahead of the exams, as part of the latest rule imposed by the government after question leaks in public exams turned endemic.

    American gets 20 years in jail for plotting IS attack with money from UK-Bangladeshi firm

    A man, who received money from a UK-Bangladeshi firm run by a supporter of the Islamic State, has been sentenced to 20 years in jail. The 33-year-old was given the jail term by a US court on March 30, reports the Baltimore Sun. He was convicted for accepting thousands of dollars from Islamic State terrorists overseas to carry out an attack in the US. According to the report, Mohamed Elshinawy had pleaded guilty in August, 2017 to receiving money from the terror group in the summer of 2015. The case is the only known example of the Syrian group sending money to an operative in the US.

    Teletalk plans 4G launch in Aug, with just Tk 200cr

    Teletalk is preparing to launch fourth generation (4G) mobile service, albeit in big cities, with optimum visibility by August and plans to invest only Tk 200 crore from its own funds to develop 1,100 or around a fourth of its network sites.

    Bangabandhu satellite flying on April 24!

    The country's first satellite 'Bangabandhu Satellite - 1' might be launched in space on April 24. America Space, news media on satellite and technology, informed this in a tweet on Tuesday referring to Thales Alenia Space, responsible for the construction of the satellite. France's Thales Alenia Space, in charge of satellite construction, says in a tweet message, the satellite will leave the Thales Alenia Space Plant on March 28 (Wednesday). Then, the cargo aircraft carrying satellite will start its journey from the Antonov Nice Airport to the United States on March 29.
